Becoming Like Christ (Part 4)
Becoming Like Christ: A Guide to Forgiveness and Enduring Suffering
As Christians, we are called to reflect Jesus – not physically, but spiritually. Our lives should manifest His qualities and attributes, showing a clear family resemblance to our Savior.
What Does It Mean to Be Like Christ in Forgiveness?
When someone repents and places their faith in Jesus Christ, He forgives their wrongdoings completely. This divine pardon cleanses a person of sin and releases them from its debt and penalty.
How Can Jesus Forgive Sin?
The foundation of God’s forgiveness is Jesus Christ’s atoning work on the cross. By living a sinless life and taking our punishment upon Himself, Jesus paid the price for our sins. Through His death and resurrection, He defeated sin and death, making forgiveness possible for all who repent and believe.
How Should Christians Practice Forgiveness?
Just as Christ forgave us, we must forgive others. This means:
- Taking the initiative to forgive
- Releasing others from the wrongs they’ve committed against us
- Not holding offenses against people any longer
Forgiveness doesn’t mean:
- Approving wrong actions
- Excusing evil
- Necessarily reconciling relationships
What Happens When We Don’t Forgive?
Unforgiveness leads to:
- Anger
- Resentment
- Wrath
- Rage
- Desire for revenge
Holding onto unforgiveness is like drinking poison and waiting for the other person to die – it only hurts ourselves.
How Should Christians Handle Suffering?
Christ provided us with a model for handling suffering. He endured:
- Unjust accusations
- Insults
- Physical abuse
- Betrayal
- False sentencing
- Death
Through it all, Jesus:
- Remained patient
- Did not seek revenge
- Kept trusting God
- Continued His mission
What Should Our Response Be to Suffering?
As followers of Christ, we’re called to:
- Patiently endure unjust suffering
- Keep trusting God
- Maintain our faith and testimony
- Stand firm in truth
- Continue serving Jesus regardless of consequences
Life Application
This week, examine your heart and ask yourself:
- Is there someone I need to forgive? What’s holding me back?
- How do I respond when I face suffering for my faith?
- In what specific ways can I better reflect Christ’s example of forgiveness and endurance?
Challenge: Identify one person you need to forgive and take active steps this week to release that offense to God. Write down a specific prayer of forgiveness and commit to praying it daily until you feel the burden lift.
Remember, becoming like Christ is our ultimate goal as Christians. Each day presents new opportunities to grow more like Him in forgiveness and patient endurance through suffering.
