Becoming Like Christ (Part 3)
Growing in Christlikeness: Being Like Jesus in Mission and Attitude
Just as children often imitate their parents, Christians are called to imitate Christ. This exploration focuses on two specific ways believers should reflect Jesus: in His mission and in His attitude.
How Are We Called to Be Like Jesus in His Mission?
Jesus was sent by the Father with a divine purpose – to live a sinless life, die for our sins, and offer salvation to all who believe. Similarly, believers are sent into the world to continue this mission.
This mission takes several forms:
- Being “fishers of men” (Mark 1:17)
- Serving as witnesses (Acts 18)
- Making disciples (Matthew 28:19-20)
Why Do Many Christians Struggle with Mission?
Many believers love being part of “Team Jesus” but prefer watching from the sidelines rather than actively participating in the mission. This passive approach contradicts God’s goal of conforming us to Christ’s image, which includes being missional.
How Should We Mirror Christ’s Attitude?
Philippians 2:5 calls believers to have “the same attitude as Christ Jesus.” This attitude is characterized by:
- Humility over selfishness
- Putting others’ interests before our own
- Serving others willingly
- Avoiding empty conceit
What Does Biblical Humility Look Like in Practice?
True humility manifests in various ways:
- Graciously giving up personal preferences
- Letting others go first
- Sharing credit with God for accomplishments
- Accepting correction with grace
- Using resources to help others instead of self-indulgence
Life Application
This week, take these practical steps to grow in Christlikeness:
- Practice sharing the gospel with family members or close friends to become more comfortable with evangelism
- Pray daily for God to give you eyes to notice others’ needs
- Reflect each evening on opportunities where you either showed or missed chances to demonstrate humility
Questions to Consider:
- How am I actively participating in Christ’s mission to reach the lost?
- In what areas of my life do I need to demonstrate more humility?
- What specific steps can I take this week to put others’ interests before my own?
Remember, the goal isn’t just to admire Christ’s characteristics but to actively pursue becoming more like Him in both mission and attitude.
