Becoming Like Christ (Part 2)
Becoming More Like Christ: Understanding Service and Love
Jesus calls us to be like Him in several specific ways. Two key aspects of Christlikeness are demonstrated through service and love. Understanding these characteristics helps us grow closer to the example Jesus set for us.
What Does It Mean to Serve Like Jesus?
Jesus demonstrated the ultimate example of service when He washed His disciples’ feet – a task normally reserved for the lowest servants. This act showed that no task is too menial and no person too insignificant when it comes to serving others.
How Can We Serve Like Jesus Today?
Modern examples of Christ-like service include:
- Washing dishes after church events
- Changing diapers in the nursery
- Mowing lawns for those unable
- Grocery shopping for shut-ins
- Helping single parents with childcare
- Serving at homeless shelters
- Cleaning homes for elderly
What Are the Requirements for Serving Like Jesus?
Two essential elements are needed to serve like Jesus:
- Love – Genuine care and concern for others
- Humility – Willingness to set aside status and pride
What Does It Mean to Love Like Jesus?
Biblical love goes beyond emotion. It is an intentional choice to value people and commit to their well-being. This love:
- Transcends feelings
- Involves conscious decisions
- Demonstrates concern through action
- Requires sacrifice
- Flows from God’s love within us
Why Is Love So Important?
Jesus said people would recognize His disciples by their love for one another. Love is the solution to many problems:
- Disobedience stems from lack of love for God
- Wrong actions toward others show lack of love
- Failing to help those in need indicates closed hearts
- Not sharing the gospel reveals insufficient love for others
Life Application
This week, take on two specific challenges:
- Find someone to serve in a practical way. Ask God to show you a need you can meet.
- Start at home by asking family members: “What can I do to better love you?”
Questions to consider:
- Who has a need that I can meet this week?
- In what ways am I holding back from serving others?
- How can I demonstrate more Christ-like love to those around me?
- What tasks do I consider “beneath me” that I need to approach with humility?
Remember: We are called to be like Christ in both service and love. Though we may fall short, we keep moving forward, knowing God is working to conform us to His Son’s image.
