Understanding the Humanity of Jesus: A Christmas Reflection

Introduction

As we approach the Christmas season, it’s essential to reflect on the profound truths of the Incarnation. This sermon, based on Luke 2:39-40, delves into the humanity of Jesus Christ, emphasizing that He was fully God and fully man. Understanding this dual nature is crucial for our faith and offers us deep encouragement in our daily lives.

What Does It Mean That Jesus Was Fully Human?

Jesus Grew Physically

In His humanity, Jesus experienced physical growth just like any other human being. Luke 2:39-40 tells us that Jesus grew and became strong. This growth was not just spiritual or intellectual but also physical. From infancy to adulthood, Jesus went through all the stages of human development. He experienced thirst, hunger, fatigue, and even death. This physical growth underscores His complete identification with us.

Jesus Grew Mentally

Jesus also grew in wisdom and knowledge. He did not come into the world with all knowledge pre-installed. Instead, He learned to talk, read, and understand the Scriptures. This gradual intellectual development highlights His genuine human experience. Despite being fully God, Jesus chose to limit His divine knowledge to grow and learn as a human being.

Jesus Grew Spiritually

Luke 2:40 also mentions that the grace of God was upon Jesus. This indicates His spiritual growth and favor with God. Jesus spent time in prayer, studied the Scriptures, and lived in complete dependence on the Holy Spirit. His spiritual growth prepared Him for His ministry and ultimate sacrifice on the cross.

Why Did Jesus Need to Become Fully Human?

To Identify With Us

Jesus’ humanity allows Him to fully identify with our experiences. Whether you’re a child, teenager, or adult, Jesus understands your struggles and joys because He lived through them. This identification makes Him a compassionate and understanding Savior.

To Fulfill God’s Plan

Jesus’ humanity was essential for fulfilling God’s plan of salvation. Only a sinless human could pay the penalty for our sins. Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection were all part of God’s redemptive plan, which required Him to be fully human.

To Model Spiritual Growth

Jesus’ life serves as a model for our spiritual growth. He showed us the importance of prayer, Scripture study, and dependence on the Holy Spirit. His example encourages us to grow in our relationship with God.

Life Application

Embrace Jesus’ Humanity

Understanding that Jesus was fully human should encourage us to draw closer to Him. He knows our struggles and can sympathize with our weaknesses. This week, take time to reflect on Jesus’ humanity and how it impacts your life.

Grow Spiritually

Just as Jesus grew spiritually, we are called to grow in our relationship with God. Commit to regular prayer, Bible study, and worship. Consider setting up a family worship time to help your children grow in their faith.

Questions for Reflection

  • How does knowing that Jesus was fully human change your perspective on your struggles?
  • What steps can you take this week to grow spiritually, following Jesus’ example?
  • How can you help your family or community grow in their faith?

Conclusion

Jesus’ humanity is a profound truth that offers us immense encouragement. He grew physically, mentally, and spiritually, just as we do. This Christmas, let us celebrate the Incarnation with a renewed understanding of what it means for Jesus to be fully human. Let His life inspire us to grow in our relationship with God and to live out our faith with renewed vigor.
