Celebrating Christ at Christmas

Introduction

As we approach the Christmas season, it’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of holiday traditions, gift exchanges, and family gatherings. However, it’s crucial to recalibrate our focus and remember the true reason for the season: celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. In Luke 2:21-32, Simeon, a devout Jewish man, provides a powerful example of how to celebrate Christmas in alignment with God’s will.

Who Was Simeon?

A Righteous and Devout Man

Simeon was a man who took God seriously. He lived according to God’s law and was described as righteous and devout. His life was a testament to his faith and dedication to God.

Looking for the Consolation of Israel

Simeon eagerly awaited the fulfillment of God’s promise to send the Messiah, the Savior who would bring comfort and salvation to Israel. His anticipation was rooted in a deep understanding of God’s promises.

Led by the Spirit

The Holy Spirit revealed to Simeon that he would not die before seeing the Lord’s Christ. This divine revelation guided him to the temple at the exact moment when Mary and Joseph brought baby Jesus for the purification rituals.

Celebrating Jesus as the Salvation of God

Simeon’s Declaration

Upon seeing Jesus, Simeon took Him into his arms and blessed God, declaring that he could now depart in peace because he had seen God’s salvation. This salvation was not just for the Jews but for all people, including the Gentiles.

The Significance of Jesus’ Name

The name “Jesus” means “God saves,” aligning with Simeon’s declaration. Jesus came to save humanity from sin, offering forgiveness and reconciliation with God.

A Universal Savior

Simeon’s testimony aligns with various biblical accounts, including the angel’s message to Joseph and the shepherds, and Zechariah’s prophecy. Jesus is the promised Savior who came to deliver us from sin and grant us eternal life.

Jesus as the Light of Revelation to the Gentiles

Dispelling Darkness

In the Bible, light symbolizes holiness, righteousness, and truth, while darkness represents sin and ignorance. Jesus came to dispel the darkness and reveal God’s truth to the Gentiles.

Fulfillment of Prophecy

Simeon’s declaration points back to the book of Isaiah, where the Messiah is described as a light to the nations. Jesus’ coming fulfilled this prophecy, bringing God’s salvation to the ends of the earth.

Equal Footing for Jews and Gentiles

Simeon’s statement clarifies that God’s salvation is available to all people, not just the Jews. This inclusion of the Gentiles was a mystery that many Jews struggled to accept, but it was part of God’s divine plan.

Jesus as the Glory of Israel

The Privilege of the Jews

Jesus is the glory of Israel, the fulfillment of God’s promises to the Jewish people. He is their honor, fame, and splendor, chosen by God to bring salvation to the world.

A Magnet for All Nations

Jesus’ role as the glory of Israel draws all eyes to Him, making Israel great through what the Messiah achieves. He is the magnet that attracts people to God’s salvation.

Life Application

Recalibrating Our Celebration

As we celebrate Christmas, let’s focus on who Jesus is and what He came to do. Simeon’s example teaches us to celebrate Jesus as the salvation of God, the light of revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of Israel.

Sharing the Good News

Think about the people in your life who may not know the true meaning of Christmas. Share the message of God’s love and salvation with them. Use Gospel tracts or church invite cards to spread the word.

Reflecting on Our Relationship with Jesus

Ask yourself:

  • Am I celebrating Christmas in a way that honors Jesus?
  • How can I share the message of Jesus’ salvation with others?
  • What adjustments do I need to make to keep my focus on Jesus this season?

A Challenge for the Week

If you haven’t yet committed your life to Jesus, take the next 16 days leading up to Christmas to read a chapter a day from the Gospel of Mark. Let Jesus reveal God, sin, and salvation to you through His Word.

Conclusion

As we celebrate Christmas, let’s not miss the greatest news: Jesus, our Savior, has come. He is the salvation of the world, the light of the Gentiles, and the glory of Israel. May we honor Him in our celebrations and share His love with those around us.
